  • 马来语 Sentosa 的音译，有“安乐”、“安宁”的意思。
  • 圣淘沙岛原名为“绝后岛”（马来语为 Pulau Blakang Mati），此名可能在19世纪以前就已存在。名字的由来说法不一，其中一说为早期岛上面临海盗的残害，另一说则声称“战士”的遗体葬在附近。
  • 1880年代，英军在岛上建设海域防卫设施，其中的西乐索炮台（Fort Siloso）至今已改造成西乐索炮台投降纪念馆（Surrender Chambers）。
  • 1942年，英国殖民者为了守护新加坡这块殖民地，在岛上装置了枪支设备。当日本军入侵新加坡时，绝后岛成为许多华人被日军杀害的地点。

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “圣淘沙” is the transliteration of the Malay word sentosa, which means “peace” and “tranquillity”.
  • Sentosa island was formerly known as Pulau Blakang Mati, which means “island of death behind” in Malay. This name is believed to have existed even before the 19th century. There are different accounts of how the island came to acquire this name. One version attributes it to a history of killings and piracy on the island in its early days, while another version claims that it is because the bodies of warriors were buried nearby.
  • In the 1880s, the British army built maritime defence facilities on the island. Fort Siloso on Sentosa has now been converted into the Fort Siloso Surrender Chambers.
  • In 1942, the British installed gun equipment on the island to protect the colony of Singapore. When the Japanese army invaded, many Chinese were killed by Japanese soldiers on Pulau Blakang Mati.
  • In the Malaysia Agreement signed on 1963, Pulau Blakang Mati was included as part of Singapore. Its status remained unchanged after Singapore gained its independence.
  • In 1969, the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board sought to develop Pulau Blakang Mati into a tourist attraction. It organised a naming competition, and the name “Sentosa” emerged the winner.
  • In March 2010, Sentosa welcomed Resorts World Sentosa, a worldclass tourist destination. Its main attractions include the first Universal Studios theme park in Southeast Asia and the first casino in Singapore.
