The Public Talk was held on 19 May 2018, at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Multi-Purpose Hall. Man Shu Sum, well-known veteran of the local media industry, provided insights on stimulating the younger generation’s interest in Mandarin and the Chinese culture. He was joined by local presenter and broadcast journalist, Diana Ser, and lyricist, Xiaohan, who shared tips on how young parents can sustain an immersive environment for their children. Together, they discussed what it takes to keep the Chinese language and culture vibrant in Singapore.

About the Speakers
Keynote Speaker
Man Shu Sum is a veteran of the local media industry, with a wealth of experience in TV management, content development, as well as industry development. He is currently the Associate Director at the Academy of Film, at the Hong Kong Baptist University. He is also Chief Jury of the Asian Television Awards, a member of the Singapore Media Festival Advisory Board, Resource Panellist of the SPH Chinese Media Group and a member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s Entertainment Industry Advisory Committee.

Diana Ser is a veteran presenter and broadcast journalist with more than two decades’ experience in the Singapore media industry. Effectively bilingual in English and Mandarin, Diana is passionate about nurturing bilingualism in her three children aged 12, 10 and 7. In 2015, she launched a digital platform called “Crazy About Chinese” to encourage parents to do more to nurture bilingualism during the critical preschool years.
Xiaohan is one of Singapore’s most prolific and awarded Mando-pop lyricists, having won Best Lyricist seven times at the Singapore Hit Awards, and was awarded Best Local Lyrics thrice at the SPH e-Awards, and is the first and only Singaporean lyricist to be nominated for the prestigious Taiwan Golden Melody Award. She is also a regular columnist for Lianhe Wanbao, and an author of 4 books, one of which won her a second prize in the Readers’ Choice Award 2017. Xiaohan is one of the founders of music label “Funkie Monkies” with fellow songwriter, producer/musician Eric Ng.
Moderator
Tan Leng Tuan is the Editor of SPH Chinese Media Group’s (CMG) Student Publications. She graduated from both the London School of Economics and Political Science (International Relations, BSc) and Peking University (Journalism, MA). She joined CMG in 2006 and previously worked as a content producer with omy.sg, and as education and culture correspondent with the Lianhe Zaobao News Desk.
