DEFINITION

Noun

A traffic control device which protrudes slightly from the surface of the road to ensure that vehicles reduce their speed. Also known in Mandarin as “路峰”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Road humps are generally installed at the entrance and exit of roads and anywhere else where vehicles are required to slow down.
  • They are usually painted with yellow diagonal stripes.
  • Some road humps have a wider top surface that incorporates a zebra crossing, ensuring that vehicles reduce their speed and at the same time allowing pedestrians to cross safely.
  • To facilitate the smooth travel of buses and to ensure the safety and comfort of bus passengers, the Land Transport Authority has constructed wider and lower road humps known as bus-friendly humps.
