释义

名词

奎因街(Queen Street)的俗称。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of Queen Street.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Queen Street is the third major road that runs parallel to North Bridge Road.
  • Both Queen Street and Victoria Street were named in commemoration of Queen Victoria.
  • Queen Street used to be an enclave for Eurasians, and the local Hokkien term for Eurasians was sek ka nee (色仔年), a transliteration of the Malay term Serani. Hence, Queen Street was also previously known as “色仔年街”, meaning “Sekani Street”.
  • During the colonial period, Queen Street was known for the laundry businesses run by Indians.
  • As Queen Street was where immigrants from Fuqing (in Fujian province) prospered as well, it was also known as “小福清” (literally, “Little Fuqing”).
例句
从9岁开始就帮忙外婆在“小坡三马路”(现在的奎因路)巷子口卖蚝饼,因不想外婆手艺失传,学会后自己长大也开档口贩卖,一做就是30年。(《新明日报》,16/10/2019)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
From the time I was nine, I helped my grandmother sell fried oyster cakes at Queen Street. As I did not want her craft to be lost, I later set up my own stall selling oyster cakes. It has been 30 years now. (Shin Min Daily News, 16/10/2019)
