Noun

A car that can be used during off-peak hours. The Mandarin name literally translates as “red plate car”, as this type of cars uses red car plates with white lettering.

由来
  • 1994年10月1日，红牌车/非繁忙时段用车计划的推行，为少用车的驾车人士节省了注册车费和路税，同时又不会加重交通阻塞的问题。为了与普通车牌使用者有所区别，车牌以红底白字标明， “红牌车” 因而得名。
  • 2010年1月25日起，这项计划有所调整。在新修改的红牌车计划（也称非繁忙时段用车计划， Revised Off-peak Car Scheme) 下，当局取消在星期六和五个公定假日（新年、农历新年、开斋节、屠妖节和圣诞节）前夕用红牌车的限制，车主也可获得路税回扣。
ETYMOLOGY
  • When the Off-peak Car (OPC) Scheme was launched on 1 October 1994, its aim was to allow car owners to save on registration fee and road tax without causing traffic congestion. In order to differentiate vehicles under this scheme from other vehicles, OPCs are to use red plates with white lettering, hence the name “red plate cars”.
  • The OPC Scheme was revised on 25 January 2010. Under the Revised Off-Peak Car (ROPC) Scheme, ROPCs are no longer restricted for use on Saturdays and the eves of five public holidays (New Year, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali and Christmas). Furthermore, ROPCs can receive a rebate on road tax.
