释义

名词

非繁忙时段用车,车牌以红底白字标明,因而得名。

DEFINITION

Noun

A car that can only be used during off-peak hours. The Mandarin name literally translates as “red plate car”, as such cars have red licence plates. Also known as “周末用车”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • In 1991, the Singapore Government introduced the Weekend Car (WEC) scheme, which was later replaced by the Off-Peak Car (OPC) scheme in 1994. Both schemes allowed infrequent vehicle users to save on car registration fees and road tax, while also addressing traffic congestion issues. However, these vehicle owners were only allowed to use their cars during specific time periods.
  • In order to differentiate vehicles under this scheme from regular vehicles, OPCs have red plates with white lettering.
  • The OPC Scheme was revised on 25 January 2010. Under the Revised Off-Peak Car (ROPC) scheme, ROPCs are no longer restricted from use on Saturdays and the eves of five public holidays (New Year, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali and Christmas). Like OPCs, ROPCs receive a discount on road tax.
例句
