释义

名词

  1. 新桥路(New Bridge Road)的俗称。也称“大坡二马路”。
  2. 维多利亚街(Victoria Street)的俗称。也称“小坡二马路”。

DEFINITION

Noun

  1. The colloquial name of New Bridge Road. Also known as “大坡二马路”.
  2. The colloquial name of Victoria Street. Also known as “小坡二马路”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The “new bridge” in the name “New Bridge Road” refers to Coleman Bridge, built in 1840. As the road runs parallel to South Bridge Road, colloquially known as “大坡大马路” (main road in the South Bridge Road area), it was called “大坡二马路” (second major road in the South Bridge Road area).
  • As Victoria Street runs parallel to North Bridge Road (colloquially known as “小坡大马路”, main road in the North Bridge road area) and was built slightly later, it became colloquially known as “小坡二马路” (second major road in the North Bridge Road area), which was abbreviated as “二马路”.
  • Before it was officially named Victoria Street, the road was variously known as Rochor Street and Marbro Street.
  • Victoria Street was also colloquially known in Chinese as “后马车街”.
例句
据汤生1840年代的地图,二马路一边是大马路的洋房后院,另一边已出现一排土地面积较小,有庭院的小洋房。(《联合晚报》, 1/1/2020)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
