• The “new bridge” in the name “New Bridge Road” refers to Coleman Bridge, built in 1840. As the road runs parallel to South Bridge Road, colloquially known as “大坡大马路” (main road in the South Bridge Road area), it was called “大坡二马路” (second major road in the South Bridge Road area).
• As Victoria Street runs parallel to North Bridge Road (colloquially known as “小坡大马路”, main road in the North Bridge road area) and was built slightly later, it became colloquially known as “小坡二马路” (second major road in the North Bridge Road area), which was abbreviated as “二马路”.
• Before it was officially named Victoria Street, the road was variously known as Rochor Street and Marbro Street.
• Victoria Street was also colloquially known in Chinese as “后马车街”.

Based on Thomson’s map from the 1840s, Victoria Street was lined on one side by the backyards of bungalows facing North Bridge Road, and on the other side by a row of smaller bungalows with courtyards. (Lianhe Wanbao, 1/1/2020)

Bugis MRT Station, Bugis Junction, Bugis Street and Bugis Village – all found along Victoria Street – are named after the Bugis people. They came to Singapore from Sulawesi in Indonesia and contributed to the founding and early development of Singapore.
