An area located in eastern Singapore, with Hougang and Aljunied to the north, Marine Parade to the south, Bedok to the east and Kallang to the west.

由来
  • 福建话对马来语 geylang 的音译。“芽笼”一词在福建话中念为 geh lang。
  • 有说法认为，马来语的 geylang 实际上是 kilang 的误写。 Kilang在马来语中含有工厂的意思，而由于当地早期设有很多椰子加工厂，因而得名。
  • “芽笼路”（Geylang Road）这个名称最早在1852年便已经出现于报章之中，并在1912年被确认为官方地名。
  • 芽笼河（Geylang River）把芽笼一分为二，东边成为以马来人为主的聚集地，西边则成为以华人为主的聚集地。
  • 芽笼河以东的地区因为种植香茅而称为“Geylang Serai”（音译为“芽笼士乃”），因为 serai 在马来语中指香茅。
  • 芽笼是早期新加坡马来族群聚集的主要地方。至今，这个地区仍保留了本地马来族群的文化色彩。

ETYMOLOGY
  • The term “芽笼” is the Hokkien transliteration of the Malay term geylang, and is pronounced in Hokkien as geh lang.
  • One belief is that the Malay term geylang is a misspelling of kilang, which means “factory” in Malay. The location was so named because there were many coconut processing factories there in the early days.
  • The name “Geylang Road” first appeared in newspapers in 1852 and was confirmed as the official name in 1912.
  • Geylang River divides the Geylang area into two parts. The eastern side was a predominantly Malay settlement and the western side a predominantly Chinese one.
  • The area east of Geylang River is called Geylang Serai (transliterated to Mandarin as “芽笼士乃”) because it was planted with lemongrass, or serai in Malay.
  • In the early days, Geylang was the main gathering area for the Malays in Singapore. Today, this area still retains the cultural characteristics of the local Malay community.
  • In 1989, to promote and pass on local traditional Malay culture to future generations, the Government built Malay Village, a heritage and lifestyle cluster, in Geylang Serai.
  • Gay World, a large-scale amusement park, was once located between Geylang Road and Mountbatten Road.
