由来
  • 福建话对马来语 geylang 的音译。“芽笼” 一词在福建话中念为 geh lang。
  • 有说法认为马来语的 geylang 实际上是 kilang 的误写。Kilang 在马来语中含有工厂的意思，而由于当地早期设有很多椰子加工厂，因而得名。
  • 芽笼路（Geylang Road）最早在 1852 年便已经出现于报章之中，并在 1912 年被确认为官方地名。
  • 芽笼河（Geylang River）把芽笼一分为二，东边成为以马来人为主的聚集地，西边则成为以华人为主的聚集地。
  • 芽笼河以东的地区因为种植香茅而称为 Geylang Serai（音译为芽笼士乃），因为 serai 在马来语中指香茅。
  • 芽笼是早期新加坡马来族群聚集的主要地方。至今，这个地区仍保留了本地马来族群的文化色彩。
  • 1937 年，大型游乐场 “快乐世界（Gay World）” 在芽笼路和蒙巴登路（Mountbatten Road）一带正式开张。

ETYMOLOGY
  • The term “芽笼” is the Hokkien transliteration of the Malay term geylang, and is pronounced in Hokkien as geh lang.
  • One belief is that the Malay term geylang is actually a mis-spelling of kilang, which means factory in Malay. The location was so named because there were many coconut processing factories there in the early days.
  • The name Geylang Road first appeared in the newspapers in 1852 and was confirmed as the official name of the location in 1912.
  • Geylang River divides the Geylang area into two parts, with the eastern side becoming a predominantly Malay settlement and the western side a predominantly Chinese settlement.
  • The area east of Geylang River is called Geylang Serai (transliterated as “芽笼士乃”) because it was planted with lemongrass, which is called serai in Malay.
  • In the early days, Geylang was the main gathering area for the Malays in Singapore. Today, this area still retains the cultural characteristics of the local Malay community.
  • In 1937, Gay World, a large-scale amusement park, was officially opened in the vicinity of Geylang Road and Mountbatten Road.
  • In 1989, to promote and pass on the local traditional Malay culture to future generations, the Government built the Malay Village, a thematic park, in Geylang Serai.
