Noun

For every dollar that the public donates or deposits to a designated account or fund, the government will also allocate one dollar towards the same cause.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “一元对一元” is a paraphrase of the English term “dollar-for-dollar”.
  • If the government wants to show support for social initiatives, it will generally provide dollar-for-dollar sponsorship.
  • The dollar-for-dollar policy reduces the financial burden of beneficiary organisations. The government also hopes to encourage the public to  donate more and contribute to charitable initiatives.

If parents make deposits in their children’s Child Development Account, the government will match dollar-for-dollar between $3,000 and $15,000. This is also Singapore’s most well-known dollar-for-dollar financial assistance scheme implemented by the government.
