Waterloo Street also known in Mandarin as "滑铁卢街". More commonly known by its Mandarin name “四马路”, is bounded by Bras Basah Road and Rochor Road.

  • 四马路有许多著名的地标，如四马路观音堂佛祖庙（Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple）、克里斯南印度庙(Sri Krishnan Temple)和马海阿贝犹太教堂(Maghain Aboth )。
  • 这条街原名为“Church Street”，华文名已无法查证，音译为“丘奇街”， 意译为“教堂街”。因为这条街坐落于小坡，是多条主干道路中的第四条道路，所以俗称“四马路”或“小坡四马路”。
  • 1858年，市议会 (Muncipal Council) 将这条街改名为滑铁卢街。改名原因如下：
  1. 1815年英国军事政治家威灵顿公爵（Duke of Wellington）于滑铁卢战役 (Battle of Waterloo) 战胜拿破仑(Napoleon)，为纪念此事而命名 “滑铁卢街” 。
  2. 由于莱佛士坊(Raffles Place)附近有条同样命名为“Church Street”(华文名为漆街)的街道，因此市议会为了避免将两条街混淆而改名。
  • 1998年，新加坡市区重建局 (Urban Redevelopment Authority) 将四马路观音堂前和梧槽路（Rochor Road）附近的滑铁卢街路段改为步行街。

 

ETYMOLOGY
  • Waterloo Street is home to many famous landmarks, including the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, the Sri Krishnan Temple and the Maghain Aboth Synagogue.
  • Waterloo Street was originally known as Church Street, but its Chinese name is unverifiable. Church Street can be transliterated as “丘奇街”, or paraphrased as “教堂街” in Mandarin. As it is the fourth road that spanned the main throughfare in the North Bridge Road area, it was commonly known as “四马路” (Fourth Road) or “小坡四马路” (Fourth Road of the North Bridge Road area).
  • In 1858, the Municipal Council renamed the road “Waterloo Street” due to the following reasons:
    1. To commemorate the Duke of Wellington's victory over Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo.
    2. To avoid confusion as there was another Church Street located near Raffles Place.
  • In 1998, the Urban Redevelopment Authority designated the road in front of the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple and a part of Waterloo Street near Rochor Road as a pedestrian walkway.
