Walking on the streets near the end of a year, especially in places such as Chinatown where many Chinese people would gather at, you could always see elderly gentlemen at their stalls writing auspicious phrases in black or gold ink, working on traditional decorations for Chinese New Year on pieces of red paper sprinkled with gold powder. I don’t know when it began, but such stalls started to become fewer and fewer and eventually vanished. In its place were Chinese New Year decorations and couplets printed on plastic or fabric.
