DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of Tan Tye Place.

由来
  • 源自于福建话 ong keh sua kah ti long pnee
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “王家山脚铁廊边” originated from the Hokkien term ong keh sua kah ti long pnee.
  • Fort Canning Hill (“皇家山” or “王家山”) is a hill in Singapore with a rich history. An ancient royal palace once stood on the hill.
  • “王家山脚” refers to the foot of Fort Canning Hill, or the River Valley Road area, while “铁廊” originated from the Hokkien term ti long, which refers to an iron manufacturing factory.
  • There was an iron foundry owned by Howarth Erskine & Co. at the end of Ord Bridge, hence it was also colloquially known in Hokkien as ti long (“铁廊”), which literally translates to “iron factory”. As the foundry was located at the end of Ord Bridge that was nearer to the foot of Fort Canning Hill (“皇家山” or “王家山”), Ord Road was also colloquially known as “王家山脚铁厂” (meaning “iron factory at the foot of Fort Canning Hill”).
  • Tan Tye Place was named to commemorate Tan Tye, a Fujian-born Kinmen businessman and a leader of the Singapore Chinese community.Tan was known for his timber importing business and pineapple plantations. His factory at today’s Tan Tye Place produced the famous Istana brand of canned pineapples.
