  • 海峡殖民地的其中一个华文别称是“叻屿呷”，即石叻坡（新加坡）、槟榔屿（槟城）与吗六呷（马六甲）的统称。
  • 1899年，英国海峡殖民地货币委员会（Straits Settlements Currency Committee）在新加坡、马来亚与婆罗洲地区发行了叻币作为新的合法货币，从而保证了钞票流通的可靠性。
  • 在叻币发行之前，海峡殖民地除了依赖墨西哥与南美洲各州的银元货币供应，也使用香港、美国、日本和英国的贸易货币。
  • 1940年，叻币由马来亚元（Malaya dollar）取代。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Straits Settlements is also known as “叻屿呷” in Mandarin, a term used to collectively refer to “石叻坡” (Singapore), “槟榔屿” (Penang), and “吗六呷” (Malacca).
  • In 1899, the Straits Settlements Currency Committee issued the Straits Dollar as the new legal currency in Singapore, Malaya, and Borneo, thus ensuring the reliability of the currency in circulation.
  • Before the issuance of the Straits Dollar, the Straits Settlements relied on silver dollar currencies from Mexico and various South American states. In addition, currencies of Hong Kong, the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom were also used.
  • In 1940, the Straits Dollar was replaced by the Malaya dollar.
