ETYMOLOGY
  • Singlish is also transliterated in Mandarin as “新格利”.
  • Singapore is a multi-racial, multilingual, and multi-cultural country. When people of different races interact with one another, their languages begin to influence each other.
  • Singlish is a mixture of elements from Mandarin, Malay, Tamil, Chinese dialects and other languages spoken in Singapore. This combination has given rise to a language with its own unique pronunciations, sentence structures, grammar and vocabulary.
  • Singlish is a part of Singaporean culture and gives Singaporeans a sense of identity and familiarity.
