释义

名词

新加坡一种稀有的猫品种,它体型娇小,性格活泼好动,可以做宠物猫。

DEFINITION

Noun

A cat breed which, although named after Singapore, is rare in the country. It is small in size, active, and suitable as a pet.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Formerly known in Mandarin as “新加坡拉猫”, the Singapura cat is also known as “可亲它”, a transliteration of “Kucinta”, another name for this breed.
  • The Singapura cat is very small, but very strong. It has big ears, and green or golden eyes. Its smooth coat is ivory with brown ticking. Singapura cats are known to be smart, vivacious and affectionate.
  • The origin of the Singapura cat is unclear, but it is commonly believed that this breed originated from Singapore. The Singapura cat is also referred to in Mandarin as “阴沟猫” (literally, “drain cat”), as the cat was believed to be found in the streets and drains of Singapore.
  • In the 1970s, Tommy and Hal Meadow, an American couple who were expatriates in Singapore, noticed the unique appearance of the Singapura cats and brought them to the United States for breeding.
  • In 1982, the International Cat Association accepted the registration of the Singapura cat. In 1988, the Singapura cat took part in the championship competition and was accepted as a pure breed.
  • In 1990, the Singapura cat became the mascot of the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board. In the “Name the Singapore River Cats” competition held in the same year, Ms Ang Lian Tin won the competition with the name “Kucinta”. This name is a pun, combining the Malay words kucing (“cat”) and cinta (“love”) to suggest the meaning “I love my cat” or “We all love cats”.
  • Sculptures of the Singapura cat can be found beside Cavenagh Bridge along the Singapore River, although some have been stolen or damaged.
