DEFINITION

Noun

Singapore’s oldest leisure garden and horticultural research centre located at Cluny Road. Abbreviated in Mandarin as “植物园”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Singapore Botanic Gardens has a total land area of 82 hectares. It is a leisure garden that integrates several attractions such as Ginger Garden and Swan Lake.
  • In 1822, Singapore’s first ever botanical garden that housed local floral collections and experimental cultivation was set up by Sir Stamford Raffles at Fort Canning Hill.
  • In 1836, William Montgomerie, along with several elite figures, set up the Agricultural and Horticultural Society.
  • In 1859, the Agricultural and Horticultural Society transformed a dilapidated 60 acres-wide plantation into an British-style leisure park, which is the present Singapore Botanic Gardens.
  •  Initially, access to the Singapore Botanic Gardens was restricted to high-ranking officials from the British colonial government and armed forces. As such, the Singapore Botanic Gardens was also colloquially known in Mandarin as “兵头花园” and “红毛花园”, in which “花园” means “garden”. “兵头” was a term used by the Cantonese to refer to British military officials, while “红毛” was an umbrella term for Westerners.
  • In 2015, the Singapore Botanic Gardens was inscribed as a World Heritage Site of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. It is also the first tropical botanical garden to clinch this honourary title.
  • In 2017, National Parks began to conduct renovation works at the National Orchid Garden. This includes expansion of the current facilities and introduction of the Secret Ravine and a lowland habitat trail.
