由来

有关“梧槽”一词的由来，基本上有三种说法。第一种说法是来自马来语rocoh 这也是较多学者认可的说法。Rocoh指的是用尖木仗在地面上画界标线。据说在殖民政府使用石碑标地界之前，这是标示地界的常见做法。
第二种说法是该词来自汉语“五祖”，指在梧槽地带首先定居的五位祖先。
第三种说法认为“五祖”指的是反清复明组织天地会的创始人。1819年跟随莱佛士爵士（Sir Stamford Raffles）登陆新加坡的曹亚志为该团体的成员，他在新加坡成立天地会分支。

ETYMOLOGY

It is believed that there are three possible origins of the Mandarin term “梧槽”. The first belief is that it originated from the Malay term rocoh, and this belief is more accepted by scholars. Rocoh refers to the use of pointed wooden sticks to draw boundary lines on the ground. It is said that this was the common practice for marking boundaries before the colonial government started using boundary stones.
The second belief is that it originated from the Mandarin term “五祖”, referring to the five ancestors who first settled down in the Rochor area.
The third belief is that the Mandarin term “五祖” referred to the founder of the Anti-Qing organisation known as the “Heaven and Earth Society”. Its Singapore branch was founded by Ts'ao Ah Chih (also known as Chow Ah Chi or Cho Ah Chee), a member of the organisation who arrived in Singapore with Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819.
