释义

名词

位于新加坡东北部的岛屿,是本岛以外第二大的岛屿。

DEFINITION

Noun

An island located in the northeastern waters of Singapore. It is Singapore’s second-largest offshore island.

ETYMOLOGY
  • 8 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide, Pulau Ubin is made up of five smaller islands that were separated by mangrove swamps in the past.
  • Pulau Ubin’s original name in Malay was Pulau Batu Jubin, meaning “granite stone island”. The island was also known as “半港” among the Chinese community.
  • Pulau Ubin is reached via a boat ride of less than 15 minutes from Changi Point Ferry Terminal.
  • According to the 1990 census, there were fewer than 200 inhabitants on the island. Most of them lived in Malay and Chinese villages, and worked as fishermen. Due to the limited natural resources such as drinking water, and a lack of basic facilities such as schools and clinics, it is difficult for the islanders to remain self-sufficient.
  • Pulau Ubin is home to Chek Jawa, a protected marine habitat.
例句
乌敏岛距离本岛仅是十多分钟的路程,而这短短的十分钟,却彻底将都市和自然分开。(《联合早报》,15/6/2011)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
Pulau Ubin may be just ten minutes away from the mainland of Singapore, but these ten minutes mark a separation between the city and nature. (Lianhe Zaobao, 15/6/2011)
