ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “岸外银行” is a paraphrase of the English term “offshore bank”.
  • As early as 1968, Singapore became the first country in Asia to allow foreign banks to operate an offshore banking unit.

Their main clients are non-Singapore residents, and they cannot set up Singapore Dollar savings or fixed deposit accounts for Singapore residents. Offshore banks specialise in handling United States Dollar transactions in Asia and offshore financing.
