• In addition to allowing members to pay for medical expenses using MediSave, the CPF Board rolled out MediShield in 1990. This is a basic health insurance plan which covers medical fees for CPF members and their family members who are under the age of 80 and suffer from serious or chronic illnesses.
• From 1 November 2015 onwards, MediShield Life replaced MediShield, automatically covering all CPF members (Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents), without the need for application, regardless of age or health condition.

A Ministry of Health spokesperson revealed that under the former MediShield plan, the Government approved 290,000 and 315,000 applications for claims in 2013 and 2014, respectively. After the implementation of MediShield Life in November 2015, as many as 507,000 applications for claims were approved for the whole of 2016. (Lianhe Zaobao, 8/1/2018)

• Under the MediShield scheme, if the insured wants to make a MediShield claim in the policy year, they must first pay a fixed amount known as the Deductible. The insured only needs to pay 20% of the claimable amount, and the remaining 80% can be paid with MediShield.
• The insured must pay a certain claim amount known as Co-insurance. After paying the amount, the healthcare service under MediShield will be activated officially.
