马来文化馆的原址是1840年代竣工的苏丹皇宫（Istana Kampong Glam）。
2002年，新加坡政府将甘榜格南皇宫与毗邻的出纳宫（Bendahara House）翻修，设立了马来文化馆（Malay Heritage Centre）, 交由马来传统文化基金会（Malay Heritage Foundation）管理。2005年六月，时任总理李显龙为马来文化馆揭幕。
马来文化馆旨在为各年龄段人士提供接触与学习马来历史和文化的机会，充分发挥教育设施与旅游胜地的作用。
马来文化馆共设有六个永久展厅，通过历史文物、艺术品、多媒体及立体展览的形式，保存并展示新加坡马来人的文化遗产。马来文化馆展示了马来社群在新加坡历史上的贡献和甘榜格南在新加坡早期的发展中所扮演的角色。
2015年，马来文化馆被列为新加坡的第70座国家古迹。
2022年十月，马来文化馆为进行翻新工程而关闭，预计2026年初重开。

ETYMOLOGY

The Malay Heritage Centre is housed in a former Malay palace, the Istana Kampong Glam, which was completed in the 1840s.
In 2002, the Singapore Government renovated Istana Kampong Glam and the adjacent Bendahara House to establish the Malay Heritage Centre, managed by the Malay Heritage Foundation. It was officially opened in June 2005 by then Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
The Malay Heritage Centre aims to introduce Malay history and culture to visitors of all ages. It functions as both an educational facility and a tourist attraction.
The centre houses six permanent exhibition galleries that preserve and display the cultural heritage of Singapore’s Malays through historical relics, artworks, and multimedia and interactive exhibits. These serve to showcase the Malay community’s contributions in the history of Singapore and Kampong Glam’s role in supporting Singapore’s early development.
In 2015, the Malay Heritage Centre building was gazetted as Singapore’s 70th National Monument.
In October 2022, the Malay Heritage Centre closed for redevelopment works and is expected to reopen by early 2026.
