  • 意译自英语的 “Internet”。
  • 网际网络始于 1960 年代美国国防部设计的一套电脑网络系统。
  • 自 1995 年起，公众可通过新加坡电信公司申请加入 “新网”（SingNet），研究人员和学者则可通过大学申请加入 “科技网”（Technet）。连网需要准备一台电脑、一条电话线及一个解调器（modem）。当时主要的网际网络服务商有新网（SingNet）、太平洋网际网络（Pacific Internet）和 Cyberway。
  • 1996 年 12 月，新电信（Singtel）推出多媒体宽带实验性计划。宽带是通过不对称数字用户线与电话联系，速度比一般解调器快 200 倍。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “网际网络” is a paraphrase of the English word “internet”.
  • The internet began as a computer network system designed by the United States Department of Defense in the 1960s.
  • Since 1995, the public can subscribe to SingNet through Singapore Telecommunications Limited, while researchers and scholars can apply to subscribe to Technet through their universities. Going online requires a computer, a telephone line, and a modem. At that time, the main internet service providers were SingNet, Pacific Internet, and Cyberway.
  • In December 1996, Singtel launched a multimedia broadband trial programme. Broadband is a connection through the telephone with the Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), which is 200 times faster than the normal modem.
