由来
  • 大世界于 1929 年落成，由一处华人坟场修建而成，为附近的低收入家庭提供娱乐休闲活动。
  • 尽管如此，当时一般公众对这些休闲活动的反应不佳，所以业主在 1940 年代初期将大世界卖给邵氏兄弟国际影业有限公司（Shaw Brothers Pictures International Limited）经营。
  • 二战过后，邵氏兄弟将大世界进行规划，发展成综合娱乐区，并定名为大世界游艺场。
  • 大世界共有四家电影院、一家夜总会及两家餐馆，每年也会举办两次商业展览会，因此成为人们吃喝玩乐的好去处。
  • 随着娱乐休闲的渠道增加，大世界的魅力不再，最终于 1964 年 3 月底落幕。

ETYMOLOGY
  • Completed in 1929, Great World Amusement Park was built on a Chinese cemetery to provide entertainment and leisure activities for the low-income families nearby.
  • However, the reception from the general public to these leisure activities was underwhelming. Thus, Great World Amusement Park was sold by the original management to the Shaw Brothers Pictures International Limited in the early 1940s.
  • After World War II, Shaw Brothers developed Great World Amusement Park into an integrated entertainment area and named it “大世界游艺场” in Mandarin.
  • Great World Amusement Park had four cinemas, one nightclub, and two restaurants. It also held two commercial exhibitions yearly and became a renowned destination for people to dine and have fun.
  • With the increase in entertainment and leisure options, Great World Amusement Park declined in popularity and closed at the end of March 1964.
  • After 1964, only the cinemas and restaurants remained open until 1978, when they were formally closed.
