(State and City Planning Project)。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “快速公路” is a paraphrase of the English term “expressway”.
  • The earliest construction of expressways in Singapore began in 1964. In 1969, the section between Thomson Road and Woodsville Circle became the first expressway to open in Singapore, and is today part of the Pan-Island Expressway.
  • As Singapore’s economy grew rapidly during the 1960s, the Government embarked on the State and City Planning Project from 1968 to 1971 to address the corresponding increase in demand for transportation, with the help of the United Nations Development Programme. In 1971, the Singapore Government formulated the 1971 Concept Plan to facilitate long-term development and explored the issues of comprehensive land use planning and land use for transportation for the first time.
  • The plan aimed to build long-distance expressways connecting the entire island, and a rapid transit system in Singapore.
  • The plan’s infrastructure blueprint included a network of expressways surrounding the Central Catchment Area and connecting all parts of the island marked for development, including the Downtown area, Jurong, Changi, and various new towns.
  • In 1981, the East Coast Parkway, connecting Changi Airport and the downtown area, was officially opened. This was the first expressway in the first major transport infrastructure project in the Concept Plan.
