由来
  • 1845 年，爱伦坡巴刹由当时的英国殖民政府建成。“巴刹” 音译自马来语的 pasar，指菜市场。
  • 爱伦坡巴刹以 1841 至 1844 年担任印度总督的爱伦坡勋爵（Lord Ellenborough）命名。
  • 由于爱伦坡巴刹是继直落亚逸巴刹（Telok Ayer Market，俗称老巴刹[Lau Pa Sat]）之后在市区内建成的第二座巴刹，因此俗称为 “新巴刹”。
  • 新巴刹附近为潮州人的聚落，因此巴刹内大部分小贩售卖的是潮州美食。新巴刹也以售卖海鲜产品闻名。
  • 1968 年，适逢农历新年，新巴刹附近因有人燃烧爆竹而导致邻近的一排摊档失火。由于事发时间为凌晨，因此未能及时避免火势蔓延，致使新巴刹近乎烧毁，约 1,000 名小贩受影响。新巴刹的鱼贩之后搬到了裕廊渔场（Jurong Fishery Port）营业。
  • 1970 年代，政府在新巴刹的原址兴建政府组屋、巴刹和熟食中心。
  • 1996 年，为进行地铁东北线的建造工程，位于新巴刹原址的组屋区被政府征收。

ETYMOLOGY
  • In 1845, Ellenborough Market was built by the British colonial government. The Mandarin term “巴刹” is the transliteration of the Malay term pasar, which refers to a wet market.
  • Ellenborough Market was named after Lord Ellenborough, who served as the Governor-General of India from 1841 to 1844.
  • As Ellenborough Market is the second market built in the city area after Telok Ayer Market, which is colloquially known as “老巴刹” (meaning “old market”), it became colloquially known as “新巴刹” (meaning “new market”).
  • The Teochews’ settlement was located near Ellenborough Market. Thus, most vendors in the market sold Teochew food. Ellenborough Market was also famous for selling seafood products.
  • During Lunar New Year in 1968, a row of stalls nearby caught fire from lit firecrackers close to Ellenborough Market. As it happened in the early hours of the morning, the spread of the blaze could not be prevented, resulting in devastation of almost the entire Ellenborough Market and affecting about 1,000 hawkers. Subsequently, the fishmongers at Ellenborough Market moved their operations to Jurong Fishery Port.
  • In the 1970s, the Government built Housing and Development Board flats, a market and a hawker centre at the original site of Ellenborough Market.
  • In 1996, the housing estate at the original site of Ellenborough Market was acquired by the Government for the construction of the North East Mass Rapid Transit Line.
  • The original site of Ellenborough Market is now in the vicinity of the Clarke Quay Central mall.
