  • 19世纪末，许多移民从中国漂洋过海来到新加坡，促使各个籍贯的宗乡会馆应运而生。这些宗乡会馆主要扮演着凝聚移民的角色，并为移民提供住宿和解决就业问题等，甚至办理他们的身后事。
  • 会馆主要以地缘和血缘来划分，地缘性会馆也称乡亲会馆，由于早期移民大多来自中国南部，大致可分为福建属、广属、海南属及三江属（浙江、江西和江苏）团体。
  • 血缘会馆也称宗亲会馆，按照姓氏分类，其中包括单一姓氏的会馆，也有联宗（几个姓氏）的团体。
  • 另外也有业缘性会馆，主要按照不同行业来分类。
  • 新加坡独立后，宗乡会馆的功能逐渐改变，主要肩负起传承文化和传统的角色。
ETYMOLOGY
  • In the late nineteenth century, many migrants moved to Singapore from China, and numerous clan associations were formed as a result. These clan associations promoted social cohesion among the new migrants, provided them with lodging and employment, and even assisted in their funeral matters.
  • Clan associations can be based on kinship or locality. Clan associations based on locality are also known as folk associations. As most early migrants came from the southern parts of China, most clan associations can be grouped into Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka or Sanjiang (Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Jiangsu) associations.
  • Clan associations based on kinship are usually formed according to the family surname. Some clan associations are based on a single surname, while others are based on a joint kinship of several surnames.
  • There are also some associations based on occupation, formed according to fields of work.
  • Following Singapore’s independence, clan associations slowly evolved to assume the role of preserving and promoting Chinese culture and traditions.
