ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “朱古力” comes from the Cantonese transliteration of the English term “chocolate”.
  • “Chocolate” was originally translated into Mandarin as “巧克力”. Subsequently, under the influence of Cantonese movies, songs and popular culture from Hong Kong, the term “朱古力” began to appear frequently in Singaporeans’ everyday speech.
  • Chocolate is mostly made by grinding cacao seed kernels into a fine powder and processing it together with sugar and milk.
