A Chinese course of a lower difficulty level than the ordinary Chinese course, in terms of texts, vocabulary and examinations.

由来
  • 1999年，由时任副总理李显龙领导的华文审查委员会 (Chinese Language [CL] Review Committee) 提出了提供华文B课程的建议。此课程于2001年正式推出。
  • 华文B课程强调实际的沟通技能，帮助面临学习困难的学生将华文学到一定的程度，并且维持他们对于华文和华族文化的兴趣。
  • 相较于普通华文，华文B课程的考试把比重放在听和说方面。华文B课程的课文较简单，学生必须学习的词汇也较少。
  • 如果学生在小六离校考试 (Primary School Leaving Examination) 中，华文科目考取C或以下的得分，将能够选修华文B课程。
  • 学校也可以依据个别学生的学习情况，或者学生的校内华文考试得分，考虑是否接受学生修读华文B课程的申请。
  • 华文B课程能帮助母语较弱的学生达到被初级学院与大学录取所需的基本母语要求。
  • 学生能够从中学一年级至高中时期选修华文B课程。
ETYMOLOGY
  • In 1999, the Chinese Language (CL) Review Committee, led by then Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, recommended offering students the CL‘B’ course. This course was officially launched in 2001.
  • CL‘B’ emphasises practical communication skills to help students who are facing difficulties attaining a certain level of proficiency in the Chinese language, while maintaining their interest in Chinese language and culture.
  • Compared to the regular Chinese course, the CL‘B’ examination focuses mainly on listening and speaking. The texts of the CL‘B’ course are also simpler, with less vocabulary to learn.
  • Students who score a grade of C or below for Chinese Language in the Primary School Leaving Examination can opt for the CL‘B’ course.
  • Schools can also decide whether to accept a student’s CL‘B’ application based on the student’s learning condition or secondary school Chinese Language examination scores.
  • CL‘B’ can help students who are weaker in Chinese achieve the basic mother tongue requirements for admission to junior colleges and universities.
  • Students can opt to join the CL‘B’ course at any time during their secondary and post-secondary schooling years.
