释义

名词

中元会或庙宇等组织的负责人或主祭。

DEFINITION

Noun

The individual in charge, or the chief of worship in organisations such as groups that organise activities for Hungry Ghost Festival or temples.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Since the 19th century, most of Singapore’s clan associations, temples and groups that organise activities for Hungry Ghost Festival have had the position of censer master.
  • In these organisations, the censer symbolises inheritance and is the core of the organisation’s beliefs. Therefore, the person responsible for the censer is used to refer to the person in charge of the organisation or the chief of worship.
  • The censer master is typically responsible for overseeing the daily operational matters of the organisation. For example, at Hengshan Pavilion, an early Chinese public cemetery and temple in Singapore, the censer master is responsible for not only its ongoing operations but also worship activities and salvation activities during the Hungry Ghost Festival Festival in the seventh lunar month.
  • The election of the censer master is generally held during the annual worship event, where appropriate candidates are usually selected by throwing moon-shaped divination blocks before the deities.
