DEFINITION

Noun

Dedicated lanes for public buses on roads with multiple lanes. Abbreviated as “巴士道” in Mandarin.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “巴士道” is a combination of the transliteration and paraphrase of the English term “bus lane”.
  • Bus lanes were established to allow buses to travel faster and more smoothly in peak-hour traffic. In Singapore, the bus lane is the leftmost lane.
  • The bus lane scheme was first introduced by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in the 1970s.
  • Bus lanes are demarcated by yellow lines. Other vehicles are not allowed to drive on bus lanes on Mondays to Fridays, from 7:30 am to 9:30 am and 5 pm to 8 pm.
  • In 2005, LTA launched full-day bus lanes. These are demarcated by yellow-and-red lines. Other vehicles are not allowed to drive on these bus lanes from Mondays to Saturdays, 7:30 am to 11 pm.
  • Motorists who flout bus lane rules can be fined S$130.
  • Although bicycles, emergency service vehicles, police cars and other private buses (such as factory buses, or school buses) are allowed to use bus lanes, they cannot stop or pick up passengers in bus lanes.
  • Studies have found that bus lanes improved bus speeds by 7% to 16%.
