Noun

An area on the southern bank of the Singapore River. In the early years, it served as a quay for mooring boats, hence the name “Boat Quay”.

  • 拥有近两百年历史的驳船码头，莱佛士爵士（Sir Stamford Raffles）看到了新加坡作为自由港的潜力，而驳船码头原先的所在地又最靠近新加坡河的河口，为此决定在1842年进行填土并将这一带发展为码头。
  • 驳船码头成了新加坡许多早期先辈第一个到达的地点，非常有历史意义。华族商人也借驳船码头的方便，在附近建了洋房和私人码头，方便运送货物。由于新加坡河的河口太狭窄，大型的船只无法进入，唯有依靠小型船只如驳船来运货。
  • 1970至1980年代展开了清理新加坡河的运动，结束后驳船码头也卸下了运载货物的重任。
  • 1989年，驳船码头被列为受保护区。如今，驳船码头已不再运载货物，而是成为旅游景点和热门的夜生活场所。
ETYMOLOGY
  • Boat Quay has a history of close to 200 years. Sir Stamford Raffles saw the potential of Singapore as a free port, and as the location of Boat Quay was at that time closest to the mouth of Singapore River, land reclamation was done at the site in 1842 to develop it.
  • Boat Quay was the first landing point in Singapore for many early migrants, thus carrying great historical significance. Due to the convenience of its location, Chinese traders built bungalows and private piers nearby to facilitate the transportation of cargoes. As the mouth of Singapore River was too narrow, larger vessels could not enter. Therefore, only small vessels such as boats could be used to transport cargoes.
  • The Singapore River Clean-up Campaign carried out in the 1970s and 1980s ended Boat Quay’s important role in the trading and transportation of goods.
  • In 1989, Boat Quay was gazetted as a conservation area. Today, it is a tourist attraction and popular nightlife venue in Singapore.
