DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name for the area around Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre, and Beauty World Centre.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “条石” refers to rectangular rocks.
  • Before the mid-19th century, when systematic address planning outside urban areas was implemented, the location of the General Post Office (Fullerton Hotel today) acted as point zero of the roads system. Starting from point zero, the colonial government installed a rock milestone at every mile along the main roads.
  • Such rock milestones are made of sandstone and granite, and each stands up to 2 metres tall. When buried in the ground, about 35 centimetres of the rock protrudes from the ground.
  • According to the planning then, the vicinity of Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre and Beauty World Centre was about seven miles away from point zero, thereby leading to its name “七条石”, which means the seventh rectangular stone.
  • After the Singapore Municipal Committee developed new roads outside the city centre in the mid-19th century, the authorities established a new road system to replace the rock milestones that is still in use today."
