ETYMOLOGY
  • Since its establishment in 1960, HDB has been responsible for building affordable and high-quality public housing for the common people.
  • Types of government flats are distinguished according to the total number of rooms, which includes living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Currently, 5-Room flats can be bought from HDB or on the open market.
  • According to the Census of Population in 2020, 22.9% of Singaporeans lived in 5-Room flats and Executive flats.
  • The area of a 5-Room flat is typically about 110 square metres. “四房一厅” (four rooms and one living room) in actuality refers to three bedrooms and a space which could potentially be converted into a study or used for other purposes. The living room of a 5-Room flat is also bigger than that of a 4-Room flat. In addition to three bedrooms, a study, and a living room, there is also a kitchen, a bomb shelter, and toilets. The largest of the three bedrooms is the master bedroom, which has an en-suite toilet.
