5pm - 6.30pm & 6.45pm - 8pm
Thaiyal (Sanga Kaala Magalir) is a thematic and inter-disciplinary dance production that is centred around texts and narratives from classical Tamil literature depicting how Tamil women across time have played different roles in different historical contexts, and have upheld important moral values in these roles. The poems are selected from classical Tamil literary texts (Sanga Ilakkiyam) such as Natrinai, Kurunthogai, Kalithogai, Puranaanooru and devotional literary texts (Bhakthi Ilakkiyam) such as Naachiyaar Thirumozhi. In addition to these texts, Makoolam will also present the story of Velu Naachiyaar, the first Tamil Queen and freedom fighter who fought against the East Indian Company in India.
There will be a short 3-minute skit prior to each of the 6 dance segments. During this skit, the actors perform the gist of the poem for the audience to develop a better understanding of the literary texts. After the dance segment, there will be a speech segment that involves both students and the public (2 speakers per segment), presenting views on the relevance of classical Tamil literature in contemporary times.
