To promote Malay literature and its critical discourse, the Malay Language Council, Singapore appoints youths as Sahabat Sastera (Friends of Literature). Through this initiative, the MLCS identifies, appoints and mentors local undergraduates as Sahabat Sastera to cultivate critical thinking and discourse analysis in Malay literature. Appointed Sahabat Sastera are also given opportunities to present in various talks and participate in forums, and contribute essays and commentaries.
