释义

名词

以苏丹回教堂(Sultan Mosque)为中心展开的甘榜格南(Kampong Glam)文化区的俗称。

DEFINITION

Noun

A common name for the Kampong Glam Historic District surrounding the Sultan Mosque.

ETYMOLOGY
  • In the 19th century, Kampong Glam was already bustling with rich Arabic culture, traditional food, and trading activity.
  • In the early days of Singapore's colonisation, Sir Stamford Raffles designated this area as a settlement for Malays, Arabs and the Bugis people.
  • Till today, the streets of this area are lined with shops associated with Arab culture, as well as import and export companies dealing with Arabian trade.
  • Several roads in the Kampong Glam area are named after places in the Middle East, such as Arab Street, Haji Lane, Bussorah Street, and Baghdad Street.

例句
论名气,惹兰勿刹不及牛车水、小阿拉伯和小印度那么备受游客关注,也因此保留了更为草根的本土气息,突显了老区的多元和精彩。(《联合早报》, 14/5/2020)
SAMPLE SENTENCE

Jalan Besar is not as popular as Chinatown, Arab Street, or Little India among tourists. As a result, it retains a more grassroots and local vibe that highlights the diversity and characteristics of the old neighbourhood.
