• Stilt houses have likely been around since Singapore’s founding, or even earlier. Before Singapore’s public housing programme in the mid-20th century, stilt houses were home to many Malays and indigenous people.
• Stilt houses were designed with the tropical environment in mind. Raised on supports approximately one metre above the ground, they provided good ventilation and prevented snakes and insects from entering the house. During the rainy season, stilt houses were less likely to be affected by any rise in water level.

Sitting on 30,000 square feet of land, this old colonial bungalow is designed in Tudor style, and was made to withstand the local climate. It is infused with elements of Bengal architecture, an attap roof, wide verandahs, high ceilings and tall shuttered windows, and is raised off the ground in the manner of Malay stilt houses, altogether evoking a charming tropical atmosphere.
