Noun

A Malay-style dish in Singapore. Mutton, chicken or other meat is cut into small pieces and skewered on thin stems of the coconut leaf or bamboo sticks. The meat skewers are barbecued, then served with peanut sauce.

  • 有一说是“沙爹”一词源自于淡米尔语 sathai,原意是肉。另有说法认为,沙爹源自爪哇,其做法由阿拉伯人或印度的回教徒引入新加坡,其酱料的做法则由葡萄牙人从印度引入新加坡。沙爹一般搭配饭团食用,该饭团“ketupat”为地道的马来食品。沙爹这道美食,其来源之多元,展示了新加坡美食的独特之处。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The term “satay” is said to come from the Tamil word sathai, which means “flesh”. It is believed that satay originated in Java, and that the recipe for cooking satay was introduced into Singapore by Arabs or Muslims from India, while the Portuguese introduced the sauce into Singapore from India. Satay is usually eaten together with cooked compressed rice called ketupat, a local Malay dish. The coming together of these multicultural components encapsulates Singapore’s unique food culture.
