由来

埃尔金桥建于 1862 年，桥身是由英国殖民政府从印度加尔各答（Kolkata）运至新加坡。其名称的由来是为了纪念时任英国驻印度总督詹姆斯·布鲁斯·埃尔金伯爵（Lord James Bruce Elgin）。
由于埃尔金桥也坐落在水仙门的中心地带，所以也称之为水仙门吊桥。
1862 年的埃尔金桥是原址上的第三座桥。横跨新加坡河的第一座桥名为比森门桥（Presentment Bridge），早在 1823 年就已通行。1844 年，比森门桥被拆除，殖民政府改建成一座名为汤申桥（Thomson Bridge）的木桥供行人使用。
1926 年，埃尔金桥改建为一座钢筋水泥结构的桥，并于 1929 年建成通车。
2009 年，市区重建局（Urban Redevelopment Authority）将埃尔金桥划定为受保护文物。
2019 年，国家文物局（National Heritage Board）正式将埃尔金桥列为国家古迹。

ETYMOLOGY

Elgin Bridge was built in 1862 and its bridge was imported from Kolkata, India, to Singapore by the British colonial government. Its was named to commemorate Lord James Bruce Elgin, then British Viceroy and Governor General of India.
As Elgin Bridge is located in the heart of the “水仙门” area, it is also known as “水仙门吊桥” (suspension bridge at “水仙门”).
The Elgin Bridge of 1862 is the third bridge at the site. The first bridge across Singapore River was called Presentment Bridge, which was opened for use since 1823. In 1844, Presentment Bridge was demolished, and the colonial government converted it into a timber bridge for pedestrians, called Thomson Bridge.
In 1926, Elgin Bridge was rebuilt as a reinforced concrete bridge, which was completed and opened to traffic in 1929.
In 2009, the Urban Redevelopment Authority gave Elgin Bridge conservation status.
In 2019, the National Heritage Board gazetted Elgin Bridge as a National Monument.
