DEFINITION

Noun

Housing & Development Board (HDB) flats with one bedroom and a living room. Also known in Mandarin as “二房式组屋”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Since its establishment in 1960, HDB has been responsible for building affordable and good-quality public housing.
  • HDB flats are categorised according to the number of rooms in the flat, with the living room counting as one room.
  • Between 1960 and 1965, about 30% of flats were 2-room flats. As of 1963, all flats were built for rental only. The monthly rent for a 2-room flat then was $40.
  • In 2015, HDB rolled out the 2-room Flexi Scheme to provide more affordable housing options for the elderly and low-income groups.
  • Initially, 2-room flats came in three sizes: 37, 41, and 45 square metres of floor area. The 2-room Flexi flats come in two sizes: 37 and 46 square metres.
