英语“Woodbridge Hospital”的意译。
“板桥”指的是一座横跨实里达河（Seletar River）的木板桥，位于这家医院当时在杨厝港（Yio Chu Kang）的旧址附近。
板桥医院的前身可追溯到建立于1841年的“疯人医院”（Insane Hospital）。当时，医院位于勿拉士巴沙路（Bras Basah Road ）和明古连街（Bencoolen Street ）的交界处，仅有30个床位。
为了避免使用“疯人”一词，疯人医院于1928年更名为“精神病院”（Mental Hospital）。在二战期间，该医院被用作日本军民医院。
1951年，医院更名为“板桥医院”，并于之后搬迁至万国景（Buangkok Green）。
为了反映医院对研究、培训和公共教育的重视，板桥医院于1993年正式改名为“心理卫生学院”（Institute of Mental Health）。至今，心理卫生学院仍然是新加坡唯一的急性精神病院。

ETYMOLOGY

The Mandarin term “板桥医院” is a paraphrase of the English name “Woodbridge Hospital”.
“板桥” refers to a former wooden bridge across the Seletar River near the hospital’s former site in Yio Chu Kang.
The origins of Woodbridge Hospital can be traced back to the Insane Hospital, which was established in 1841. It was located at the junction of Bras Basah Road and Bencoolen Street and had 30 beds.
To avoid using the word “insane”, the hospital was renamed the Mental Hospital in 1928. During the Second World War, the hospital was also used as a Japanese military and civilian hospital.
In 1951, the hospital was renamed Woodbridge Hospital. It later moved to Buangkok Green.
To reflect the hospital’s emphasis on research, training, and public education, it was officially renamed the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in 1993. Today, IMH remains the only acute psychiatric medical institute in Singapore.
