• The term “脚” (kah) in Hokkien means beneath, below, or the lowest point, so the term “大树脚” (tua chew kah) means “under the big tree”. “大树” refers to a big tree.
• Jalan Pemimpin is located in Bishan, with Ang Mo Kio to the north and Upper Thomson Road to the southwest.
• The old Jalan Pemimpin was a kampung area. There was a big tree in the kampung where the residents gathered, and which served as a landmark of the area. As the old Jalan Pemimpin led directly to Thomson Road (the current Upper Thomson Road), the area was also commonly known as “汤申大树脚” (“Thomson tua chew kah”).
• There are other places in Singapore with big trees as landmarks, such as the “宏茂桥608大树脚住户中元会” (“608 Ang Mo Kio tua chew kah residents’ Zhongyuan club”).

33 years ago, the late Mr Zhang bought a single-storey bungalow in the area commonly known as tua chew kah (presently Jalan Binchang in Bishan New Town). This is where the eldest child of the Zhang family now lives. (Shin Min Daily News, 8/12/1998)

According to urban legend, during the Japanese Occupation, Japanese soldiers tried several times to cut down the big tree in the Jalan Pemimpin kampung but were never successful.
