释义

名词

克罗士街上段(Upper Cross Street)的俗称。位于牛车水的边界,始于桥南路(South Bridge Road),并沿西北方向终于合乐路(Havelock Road)。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name for Upper Cross Street, located at the boundary of Chinatown, leading from South Bridge Road and running northwest till Havelock Road.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The name of “海山街” originated from the secret society “海山公司” (“Hai San Society”) that was active in this area in the early days.
  • The official Mandarin name of Upper Cross Street is “克罗士街上段”, with “克罗士” being a transliteration of “Cross”. Cross Street is also a one-way road, leading from Raffles Quay to South Bridge Road.
  • At the beginning of the 20th century, as this area used to be home to Indian businessmen who sold meat and spices, it was also called “吉宁街”, which is a transliteration of “Kling Street”. However, as the term Kling is seen by some as a derogatory term for Indians, its use has since been discontinued.
  • In 1927, the Great Southern Hotel opened at Upper Cross Street. It was the first Chinese-owned hotel in Singapore with an elevator, as well as the tallest building in Chinatown then. The former hotel has since become the present Yue Hwa Building.
