  • “山瑞”可泛指软壳龟。它们以颈项有瘤状或刺状赘肉为特征。
  • 山瑞原产于中国海南岛,同时也产于其东南沿海一带和越南北方,后来被引进美国夏威夷和毛里求斯等地。
  • 山瑞没有牙齿,全靠镰刀一样的上颚和下颚把食物切断,直接吞到肚子里。
  • 多个品种的山瑞可食用,有说法认为山瑞肉对人类的身体有很多好处。本地也有许多山瑞炖品专卖店。
  • 自2020年十二月起,基于公共卫生风险的考量,本地湿巴刹的摊贩被禁止在巴刹内宰杀和售卖活田鸡和山瑞。
ETYMOLOGY
  • “山瑞” can refer to softshell turtles in general. They are characterised by tumour-like or spinous growths on the neck.
  • “山瑞” originated from Hainan island and the coastal areas of southeastern China and northern Vietnam, and were later introduced to Hawaii and Mauritius, among other places.
  • These turtles have no teeth and rely on their sickle-like upper and lower jaws to break down their food.
  • Many species of softshell turtles are edible. Consuming the meat is believed to confer health benefits. In Singapore, there are eateries that specialise in serving softshell turtle dishes such as turtle soup.
  • Since December 2020, vendors in local wet markets have been prohibited from slaughtering and selling live softshell turtles and frogs due to public health concerns.
