Noun
A place where the elderly can enjoy leisure and entertainment activities. Also known as Senior Activity Centre.
Singapore’s first activity centre for the elderly was established in the 1970s at Maude Road in the Jalan Besar area. It is said that this was when the term “Senior Citizens' Centre” was first coined.
Senior Citizens' Centres are jointly set up and managed by the Citizens' Consultative Committee (CCC), Community Centres/Clubs or Residents’ Committees (RC). By 1996, Singapore already had 31 Senior Citizens' Centres, which increased to 57 by 2014.
Senior Citizens' Centres mainly organise social, educational and recreational activities to encourage senior citizens to interact with each other and strengthen their bonds through social activities. These activities provide them with a chance to exercise and add some variety to their lives.
In December 2017, SingHealth established the first Community Nurse Post at the Evergreen Circle Senior Activity Centre in Tampines. Their aim was to provide medical consultation for seniors suffering from chronic diseases. Within six months, more than 260 senior citizens aged 60 years old and above have benefited from the consultation service.
There are currently eight Community Nurse Posts in Singapore. Each post is assigned two community nurses to provide nursing services, which includes health check-ups for the elderly, guidance on the prevention and control of chronic diseases, and home visits.
