释义

名词

实利基路(Selegie Road)的俗称。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of Selegie Road.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Selegie Road is the seventh major road that runs parallel to North Bridge Road.
  • It is the oldest among the seven major roads.
  • In the early days, there was a hill beside Selegie Road known as “实利基山”, which is a combination of the transliteration and paraphrase of the Malay name, Bukit Selegi. Gambier was being planted on the hill even before the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in Singapore, but this was later discontinued as the demand for gambier fell.
  • As there was a large expanse of bamboo planted around Selegie Road, the road was also colloquially known as tek-a-kah (“竹仔脚”, “underneath the bamboo plants”) or tek-a-kah tit kuey (“竹仔脚直街”, “straight lane underneath the bamboo plants”) in Hokkien.
例句
作为坡底七马路的孩子,我只要一踏出门口,马上就见车辆横冲直撞的街道。(《联合早报》,15/6/2017)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
