释义

名词

DEFINITION

Noun

A general term for an alley, street, path, or road.

由来
  • 马来语 jalan的音译。
  • 有些名字的翻 译方 式凸显其由来,“惹兰”这个词是一个例子。
  • 马来语是新加坡的国语,新加坡早期的许多地名都有马来根源。如今,许多标准化后的华文地名都是马来语地名的音译,凸显了马来语的地位与历史意义。
  • 因此,jalan 多音译为“惹兰”,而不是意译,例如译成“路”。这是政府政策的一部分,即通过保留集体回忆来创造国家身份认同。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “惹兰” is the transliteration of the Malay word jalan, meaning “street” or “road”.
  • The term “惹兰” is an example of translating place names to emphasise their origin.
  • Malay is Singapore’s national language, and many place names in early Singapore had Malay roots. To emphasise the status and historical significance of the Malay language, many standardised Mandarin place names are transliterations rather than paraphrases.
  • Hence, jalan is mostly transliterated as “惹兰”, rather than paraphrased as, say, “路” (“road”). This was part of the Government’s policy to foster a sense of national identity by preserving collective memories.
