ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “暴露” originally referred broadly to exposing something that is hidden, defective, contradictory or problematic.
  • In Singapore, the term has been extended to mean revealing parts of the body, such as by wearing short or sheer clothing.
SAMPLE SENTENCE
Instances of overly conservative people criticising women for wearing revealing clothes show up in the news from time to time. Most recently, there was an article on 20 July with the headline, “Dressing less revealingly can prevent sexual assault: Philippine police’s advice to women triggers public outcry”. In this day and age of gender equality, public outcry is indeed the expected response. (Lianhe Zaobao, 5/8/2018)
